Your yearly evaluation should not be the only time you bring up your promotion. You know why? Because that puts too much pressure on one moment. By the time you step into your boss’s office for The Big Talk, I want you to have put in so many Little Talks that the Big Talk no longer feels like a Big Deal. It should feel natural by that time. And your boss should be fully aware of not only what you want, but what you bring to the table. That makes things so much easier for both of you.
Your boss may not even be aware of key, seemingly obvious things that you’re doing. Oh you have oversight of ten contractors or belong to fourteen professional organizations and regularly go to those meetings? That’s leadership. Remind them. Make sure they know.
We’re a good distance away from review time, so let this be your mid-year reminder to keep making your case all year long. Make that big meeting into No Big Deal and see how things change for you.
I share how to get the most out of your next performance review on episode 51 of my podcast, Women Changing Leadership with Stacy Mayer.
