Once you’ve decided to move into a different industry, the challenge becomes how to get there. Here’s hot tip number one: don’t try to sell yourself on your technical skills. Whether you have a 10-year work gap or you’ve been doing something entirely different for a long time, you’re not going to have more skills than someone who has already been working in the field. So don’t pretend that you do. People will see right through this. Instead, emphasize your existing executive leadership skills. These are your transferable skills. Understand why you’re changing careers and figure out how to frame that. Without leaning on skills, talk up everything else you have to offer at a high level. Bridge that gap for both yourself and the company you want to join.
