When you take your ego out of the promotion process, you start to detach from the striving and exhaustion that can result from making your work life all about you. Once you have that distance, you may start to see that ego-driven chest-thumping is a central feature of your company. On a smaller level, even if it’s not a feature of your company, it could be a feature of your specific team. If you’re lucky, it won’t be. If it is, ask yourself if this is a place where you can thrive? Will you be able to make an impact or even have a voice? If not, it might be time to start looking for a place where you can.
