When talking to your boss about skip-level ally meetings you’re setting up, you don’t need to apologize, or ask permission, or seek guidance. In fact, you shouldn’t. All you need to do is “loop them in.” This goes for 1:1s as well. Remember, you’re keeping things high-level, and only taking them on a tour of the weeds if they ask for it. Chances are they won’t. Looping them is a courtesy that gives your boss a window on what you’re up to without them having to answer any questions or add more work. Further, it lets them know that your professional development is nonnegotiable. You’re a badass on the make. Loop them in.
