Getting promoted in a flat organization can put you in the awkward position of managing people who were formerly your peers. And some of them may not like that. So what do you do if that happens? First, remember that not everyone needs to like you. Next, play dumb. By that I mean pretend that you don’t know anything. Go around and meet with all of them to talk about their career goals. Is there a way you can help them reach those goals in the coming months? If so, great! Do that! If not, then there’s not much you can do. They may move on, or they may change. Either way, in the spaces where you have no control, that’s their journey, not yours.
