If your boss offers you less of a raise or a promotion than you’d discussed in the past, assume that they forgot your previous conversation. There’s a good chance that they did! Don’t get into “but remember when you said” because it doesn’t matter. Simply take their offer as a starting point to advocate for what you had understood would be coming based on your performance. It’s a subtle mindset shift that can make all the difference. They aren’t out to get you – they just forgot. Proceed accordingly.
