Getting out of the weeds is a process of gaining agency, and you can’t do that when you’re constantly scrambling around trying to meet deadlines. So next time your boss comes to you with an urgent request when you already have the previous three urgent requests on your plate, try this:
“I could take that on, but then (this other) project will be late. Which one would you like me to do?”
Your boss may respond in a number of ways, but the simple act of letting them know that the resource of you is not infinite and inexhaustible is one way to respect yourself and practice setting boundaries at the same time.
I share my unconventional strategy for getting out of the weeds on my podcast, Women Changing Leadership with Stacy Mayer.
