If you blurt out a number when asked what you’re hoping to make, chances are you’ve undersold yourself right out of the gate. Whenever possible, get a number out of them first Your number could be $325K, but what if their range is more like $320K to $375K? Find out first.
If they ask for your number in an interview, try this:
“What is your range?”
“Do you have a cap in mind?”
If they do give you a number or range that doesn’t seem quite there yet, try this:
“Is there any flexibility in that target?”
You don’t have to accept whatever they throw out there. It would be easier, sure. But think about how much easier your life could be with that extra money. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
