In a growing number of states, salary transparency legislation means companies now have to post a salary range in job listings. But in some cases – especially for tech or other high-paying positions – employers are gaming the system by stating salary ranges that are too broad to be helpful.
So if you find your dream job and the listing says the salary range is $50,000 to $550,000, understand that this range does not correspond to reality. And it might not be easy to find out what they’re actually paying. But that makes it more important than ever that you don’t sell yourself short: Increase your minimum ask by 25%. Or ask yourself if you want to work for a company that deliberately obscures a mandated disclosure in an effort to pay you less.
